We’re going to be using a micro mobile social networking application called Twitter whilst we’re revising for GCSE Religious Studies/AS History.

This has been set up to help you and also to form part of the research for the Becta/Historical Association project into mobile learning. Please be mindful of the above when using the service.

Understand? Good! Here’s what to do:

1.Open a new window/tab and go to Twitter.com.

2.You want the big green button that says Get Started – Join!

3.Sign up in the same way as you would with pretty much anything on the Internet. Give yourself a sensible username. I’m going to need to know who you are when you contact me! For example, something like fbloggs or fredb if your name is Fred Bloggs

4. Once you’ve got yourself signed-up and logged in, you need to configure Twitter. Your screen should look similar to the one below. Click on Settings in the top right-hand corner:

Follow the next set of instructions carefully!5.The first screen that comes up is your Account settings:

  • Set your Time Zone to (GMT) Londonl
  • In the box next to More Info URL you can put the address of your blog (if you have one)!
  • Finally and most importantly for this section, put a tick in the box that says ‘Protect my updates’.

Once you’ve done this, press the Save button.

6.Click on the Phone & IM tab. This is where we configure mobile updates – but don’t worry, people just see your username, not your phone number!

Below is an example (using a made-up phone number) of what you should do:

Once you press the Save button, you should see something like this:

You just need to text that code to the number given (+447624801423) and you will have Twitter set up for mobile updates. Mr Biddle will then be able to remind you about revising, deadlines and key factors. For Dr Dennis’ classes, the above will apply but you will also be asked to send messages via the web or by your phone (although this will cost you).

7.Next, click on the Notices tab:

Make your screen look the same as the one above and press the Save button.

8.Click on the Picture tab. You know what to do here – find an appropriate picture to represent you:

Press the Save button when you’re done.

9.Click on the Design tab and make your Twitter page individual:

10.Finally, and very importantly, you need to add Mr Biddle/Dr Dennis (also known as ‘Following’). Because we’re being careful as we’re in an education setting, you’ll need to request to follow Mr Biddle/Dr Dennis. Go to http://twitter.com/presdalesrs Or http://twitter.com/drdennis

Of course, you can also add other people in your class. Any abuses of this system will, of course, involve school sanctions being applied.

Thanks to Doug for allowing us to steal and modify his tutorial!

Dear all,

Just a quick reminder that the assessment will be due on Tuesday’s lesson! Make sure you have prepared what you are going to write before then – thinking about what changes occurred during the crusades and what stayed the same. If you want to prepare for the next lesson, I can give you your homework now! You are to watch the video clips on the Black Death from http://www.timelines.tv.

Click on the purple timeline under the video player and go to the section called ‘Black Death’. This will be the subject for the next few weeks so it will be good to go back and revisit it. :)

Timelines.tv is a great resource for Years 7, 8 and 9! This has short video clips on topics we have studied (or will be studying) and is made by an award winning film maker. Really useful for homework. :) What do you think about it?
